The Works of Edgar Allan Poe Volume 5 Edgar Allan Poe Edwin Markham Books Reviews
Good stories, not all of his most famous works
In my search for a good copy of the complete works of Edgar Allan Poe, I purchased this version.
This is nothing more than the Raven Edition 5 Volume Set of Edgar Allan Poe's Works all smooshed into one volume. This edition does not have a table of contents which makes it impossible to navigate. The search feature did not work for me at all. This 5 Volume Set can be downloaded legally for free, also without a working Table of Contents.
Do not waste your time or money. Search for the The Complete Stories of Edgar Allan Poe ( Edition April 10, 2009). Specifically the April 10, 2009 version. This has a working table of contents and as far as I am aware all of Poe's Stories. While this may not be Poe's entire works collection, it's a good start and the first one that I found that has a table of contents.
Although it took me a long time to read this, I enjoyed it all.
I found several of the items in this volume to be really good, but most were not of "classic" quality. A good read, but not a great one.
Some great short stories and interesting essays mixed in with some pieces that were difficult to understand. My main beef was that the essays about poetry left out practically all the passages from the poems that Poe was discussing. However, there's a separate volume I finished after reading this one that has all of Poe's poems, plus his critical essays about poetry. That volume included the same essays as this one, but with the poetic passages he cites intact. However, there were some problems with that volume too, where the bottoms of some of the pages were cut off. But anyway, both the ebooks were free, so I guess I shouldn't complain. I had downloaded them along with the first four volumes in the collection for free when was helping promote the movie "The Raven" a few years ago.
Who doesn't love Edgar Allan Poe! I don't like to write too much in book reviews because I feel that in order to adequately write a review, I would have to give away information that would be key to plot. I don't like to be the person to give away spoilers. Therefore my book reviews are always very short and only say a few things in order to tell you, book reviews are much to subjective and I never read a book review before I read a book. I read a book based on what the book is about which I don't read a review to get. If you want more information, buy the book and read it. )
In this final volume of the works of Poe we are at the conclusion of all his literary writings. Included in this volume are his poems, thoughts of poetry, some stories, a play and surprisingly an article written about decorating called “Furniture”. Needless to say the man to me was a enigma and not surprisingly that there is an under current of a melancholy which accompanies quite a deal of the work throughout the 5 volumes. Not always macabre in nature but some bits of humor shining though. UN-appreciated in his life, even after death his obituary notice in the New York Times by Griswold is not flattering. “this announcement will startle many, but few will be grieved by it”. But Griswold, we remember Poe but who are you? I found it interesting that their was a dedication to a published work of his poems as follows... Poems “To the noblest of her sex, The author of “The Drama of Exile”-to Miss Elizabeth Barrett Browning of England, I dedicate this volume with the most enthusiastic admiration and with the most sincere esteem. 1845 E.A.P. The most notable poems Poe wrote would likely be “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee”, but my favorite is “Alone” which I think best sums up Poe the man and his brief life.
