Wonderful characters, each with their own redeeming characteristics. However, the descriptions of the dust bowl were less than others have portrayed; perhaps this wasn't the focus. The writing was sufficient to keep me reading to the end, but again not up to the standards of other writers.
In spite of its short-comings, I do not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about those who lived through this time.
A remarkable book by a remarkable writer. The vidid portrait she paints of this family and the onset of the dustbowl is both beautiful and painful. In many ways it is about escape when escape seems impossible, what we do, how far down we dig, how much we are willing to risk to save ourselves, and how in saving ourselves we save the ones we love.
I Will Send Rain takes place during the dust bowl, and although I appreciate the historical accuracy and good editing it wasn’t enough to make this more than a two-star read for me. The writing and tone felt like a YA book, which isn’t good or bad, I just wasn’t expecting that. The plot was predictable and slow and never drew me in. The characters were flat and I had no empathy for any of them. I wanted to like this book, but it just fell short for me.
Excellent historical fiction. Very, very complex and interesting characters. The setting of the story is riveting. The novel includes illness, death, betrayal, sorrow, hard work, a family against major problems, rain, the lack of rain, faith, a boat, and so much more. Highly recommended. This book deserves an A+++++
The Bell family of Oklahoma is trying to survive the dust bowl of 1934. Samuel, the father, has strong faith. Annie is mother to Birdie and Fred. She questions her faith and commitment to her family. Birdie is sixteen and has unrealistic visions of life. Dear little Fred is mute but has so much insight. The personal struggles are real during this difficult time in our country's history. I loved everything about this poetic novel.
I really wanted to like this book because I'm fascinated by this era. It was a time of survival and that brings out either the best in a person our the worst. However, this book was just ok. I didn't hate it and I didn't love it either. It seemed like there were a lot of words used to just keep saying the same things over and over.
This book was chosen for our book club. Everyone enjoyed it, one gal likened it to 'The Grapes of Wrath', as it addressed the same type of despair. My only disappointment was there were no book club discussion points. The book was definitely a quick and easy read,
Set in Oklahoma during the 1930's, a severe drought brought on historically intense and life threatening dust storms. Set in a small town, the book focuses on a little farming family faced with the decision to flee or wait out for rain. Through hunger & thirst of their own as well as their farm animals their faith is challenged.
This book is difficult to put down. I hope you enjoy it!
