While a bit confusing at times, I found this book fresh, creative, and lyrical. I was captivated by the flowing, intense rhythm, and constantly compelled to pull myself out of the engrossing story to think. This is a very original author. I've never read anything like this ever, and I look forward to more from him.Tags : The Traitor [Michael Cisco] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I read it...but I didn't get it. I guess you have to be into something I am not.
One of my favorite reads of the year. Surrealistic setup; the narrator is a soul burner, employ of the Empire, and must hunt down Wite, a soul burner turned spirit eater. Cisco turns the strange and exotic into something so personal. The key here, is the narrative voice. So many writers don't know how to use first person to their advantage (and I love me a good first person) and Cisco nails it in this book. The narrator's voice/rhythm was hypnotic, mesmerizing, the repeated bits like incantations. It builds suspense and release at the right times, and the last line of the novel, after the narrator has flogged and implicated the reader, then made the reader want to be a part of humanity's destruction, that last line is just pitch perfect.
Cisco's writing seems like he captures the the feeling of a dream, or rather, the feeling that follows you when you wake up from a particular type of dream in which you felt everything or nothing, and you were aware of these feelings or the absence of these feelings. Cisco does not need a contemporary setting for his stories; as in The Traitor, the names of places and the places themselves do not matter because they are nothing more than placeholders for inevitability. Cisco has taken the post-industrial society nightmare and has shown us that the Soul Eater and the Soul Burner concepts are as real as anything else that might be written. All writing is fantasy, and this fantasy is reality.
Beautiful. I devoured the pages and felt the emotional intensity pick up along with Noptha's brutal honesty.
This is an interesting, weird, fast read. The first 2/3rds are the most compelling. I gave it four stars because last third kind of drags. The book is also much more concerned with character interactions than world building. Your feelings towards the main character will determine whether or not you'll like this book. His opinions are complex and his actions are sometimes confusing. He is both sensitive and indifferent to the people around him. He can heal himself and others with spirit-based magic, but usually allies himself with powerful people who are willing to kill. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and think it's worth checking out.
